The walled city is beautiful, even if it is a tourist trap. The outlying forts are worth hiking to at low tide. The beaches are rather good as well. Surounding country side is beautiful and I'd recommend a drive (or biking) east to Mont Saint-Michel. Take D155 and D797 for most picturesque results. Plenty of beautiful villages along the way. English isn't generally enough outside of town so brush up on your French.

Saint Malo is likely best known as the city in which Jacques Cartier set out from on his discovery of Canada. To this end he is somewhat celebrated locally. There does seem to be an appreciation of Quebec here. Most folks snapping pics of the Cartier statute were usually from Saskatoon or Hamilton...small world.

A charming place goes baack to the 15th century, incerciles the city so you can walk and watch the sea from one side and the streets from the other with the pleasure of enjoying the delicious smells coming out of restaurants
